What is a Specialist Orthodontist?

Many people don’t realise there’s a significant difference between a dentist who offers orthodontic treatments and a specialist orthodontist like Dr Jeet Parekh at SmileHQ Brentwood. The distinction is crucial when you’re considering who should be responsible for aligning your smile.

  • What Sets a Specialist Orthodontist Apart
  • Has completed an additional 3-4 years of full-time university training beyond dental school
  • Officially registered on the General Dental Council’s Specialist List for Orthodontics
  • Focuses exclusively on orthodontics rather than general dentistry
  • Trained to handle complex cases, including severe bite issues and developmental concerns
  • Has treated thousands of orthodontic cases across their career
  • Qualified to coordinate multidisciplinary treatment with other specialists when needed
  • Continuously updates knowledge through research and advanced education
  • Uses specialised diagnostic techniques and technology not typically found in general practices
  • Different from “special interest” dentists who have only completed short courses or certificates

You might need specialist orthodontic treatment if…

  • You have complex alignment issues involving your bite (overbite, underbite, crossbite)
  • Previous orthodontic treatment hasn’t delivered the results you wanted
  • You’re seeking invisible orthodontic options like lingual braces or Invisalign
  • Your child shows early signs of alignment or jaw development issues
  • You want orthodontic treatment that works harmoniously with other cosmetic procedures
  • You’re concerned about facial profile changes as part of your orthodontic journey
  • You have specific aesthetic goals that require precision planning

Fantastic customer experience from start to finish. It’s a truly state of the art facility, stylish and modern. You feel very relaxed the moment you walk in. I saw Dr Sasha and his Nurse Charlotte who were both excellent and very professional. Certainly a dental practice where I feel in safe hands and will continue to visit for years to come.

By far one of the best dental experiences I’ve ever had! I’ve been looking for a good dentist for a long time and always leave disappointed. The moment I walked into Smile HQ, I felt like I stepped into a Harley Street clinic – so clean and kind service. Dr Sasha took his time to explain and make sure I was very comfortable. The best dentist I’ve ever met who was actually so knowledgeable. Charlotte was brilliant and always had a smile on her face! 100% recommend this place!

I have visited SmileHQ for a consultation only, so cannot comment on actual treatment received at this point. However, from my initial enquiry through to my consultation, I have been extremely impressed by the friendliness and professionalism of all of the staff I have so far encountered. There has been no pressure to proceed with treatment and the refundable deposit for the consultation should you decide not to go ahead is commendable and shows an element of the ethos at this practice. I feel very confident in their ability and expertise in this field to eventually make me smile again and would highly recommend anyone taking the first steps on their own personal journey with SmileHQ.

Dr. Vish is amazing with the care and detail of his planning for your treatment and gets you that forever smile at the end of treatment. Would highly recommend this clinic and their specialist services in cosmetic dentistry and Implants.

The atmosphere was so peaceful. The staff are friendly and welcoming. They listened to my needs and considered my comfort every step of the way. I would definitely recommend. I felt so confident walking out after just one clean. Already have my next appointments booked in. Now going to the dentist isn’t so scary.

This is a wonderful practice. I was seen at short notice because I was in pain and could not get an appointment with my regular dentist and it was well worth the one hour journey to get there. Dr Sasha, Nurse Stephie and Holly and Claire on reception could not have been more welcoming and kind. I had x Ray and antibiotics and everything was unhurried and explained in detail. Thank you all so much.

What an amazing experience I had from start to finish. The facilities were first of all immaculate and the staff were so professional and friendly. I am over the moon with my final result (8 composite veneers) and I couldn’t be happier with the work completed by Dr Pola Reza. A big thank you to the dental assistant Claire, and the Front of House staff Hannah & Holly for making my experience so amazing. Couldn’t recommend them more!

Meet Our Orthodontic Specialist

Specialist orthodontist Dr Jeet Parekh has dedicated his career to the art and science of creating beautiful, functional smiles.

After qualifying as a dentist in 2011, Jeet pursued additional training that sets him apart from general dentists who offer basic orthodontic treatments. His journey began with valuable experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery across multiple hospitals, including the world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

His exceptional work has earned him multiple prestigious accolades, including the coveted Dewell Award from the American Association of Orthodontics—recognition that places him among the elite practitioners in his field.
Jeet’s research passion lies in functional appliances and growth modification—areas where he’s not just practicing but actively contributing to the advancement of orthodontic science. His published work in the American Journal of Orthodontics demonstrates his commitment to evidence-based care.

Beyond treating patients at SmileHQ Brentwood, Dr Jeet leads his own training academy, sharing his expertise with dentists and specialists looking to enhance their orthodontic and aligner therapy skills.

Reasons to Visit a Specialist Orthodontist

When it comes to reshaping your smile or guiding your child’s dental development, your chosen expertise makes all the difference. Here’s why Essex residents seeking orthodontic treatment should consider specialist care at SmileHQ Brentwood:

Years of Additional Training

A specialist orthodontist completes an additional 3-4 years of full-time university training beyond dental school, focusing exclusively on tooth movement, jaw development, and facial aesthetics.

Recognised Qualification

In the UK, only dentists who have completed this training and registered with the General Dental Council as orthodontic specialists can legitimately call themselves “Specialist Orthodontists.”

Complex Case Management

Specialist orthodontists are equipped to handle complicated cases that general dentists might refer out, including severe crowding, significant bite issues, and treatments requiring coordination with other dental specialists.

Dedication to One Field

Unlike general dentists who divide their time across various treatments, specialists like Dr Jeet devote their entire professional practice to orthodontics, developing mastery through thousands of focused treatment hours.

Advanced Technology Expertise

Specialist orthodontists typically invest in and maintain proficiency with sophisticated orthodontic technology that might not be economically viable in a general practice setting.

Treatment Planning Precision

The depth of a specialist’s training allows for more nuanced treatment planning that considers growth patterns, potential complications, and long-term stability of results.

Research Contribution

Many orthodontic specialists like Dr Jeet actively contribute to research and education in their field, staying at the forefront of evolving techniques and approaches.

Your Specialist Orthodontic FAQs

What’s the difference between a specialist orthodontist and a dentist with a special interest in orthodontics?

A specialist orthodontist like Dr Jeet has completed an additional 3-4 years of full-time university training beyond dental school and is registered on the General Dental Council’s Specialist List for Orthodontics. A dentist with a special interest has typically taken shorter courses (ranging from weekends to several months) in specific orthodontic techniques but hasn’t completed the comprehensive specialist program. While both can provide orthodontic treatments, specialists have significantly more in-depth training and experience, particularly for complex cases.

How do I know if I need to see a specialist orthodontist rather than a general dentist?

While general dentists can handle simple alignment cases, you should consider seeing a specialist orthodontist like Dr Jeet at SmileHQ if you have complex bite issues, significant crowding, previous unsuccessful orthodontic treatment, facial profile concerns, or if you’re seeking specialised options like lingual braces. Children with developmental concerns or adults with multiple dental issues will also benefit from specialist care.

At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic assessment by age 7, when permanent teeth are beginning to erupt. Here at SmileHQ Brentwood, Dr Jeet often sees children from ages 6-8 for early evaluations. This allows him to identify potential issues and plan interventions that may reduce or eliminate the need for comprehensive treatment later.

How long does orthodontic treatment typically take?

Treatment duration varies significantly depending on the complexity of your case and the type of treatment. Simple alignment cases might take 6-12 months, while more comprehensive orthodontic treatment typically ranges from 18-24 months. During your consultation at SmileHQ, Dr Jeet will provide a personalised timeline based on your specific needs and goals.

Is specialist orthodontic treatment more expensive than getting braces from a general dentist?

While the initial investment for specialist treatment may be higher in some cases, many patients find it more cost-effective in the long run. Specialists like Dr Jeet are trained to efficiently achieve optimal results, potentially reducing treatment time and the likelihood of complications or retreatment. At SmileHQ, we offer payment plans to make specialist care accessible for patients throughout Brentwood and surrounding Essex communities.

Do you offer invisible or discreet orthodontic options?

Absolutely! Dr Jeet at SmileHQ is highly experienced with multiple discreet orthodontic systems, including Invisalign clear aligners, ceramic (tooth-colored) braces, and lingual braces that are completely hidden behind the teeth. During your consultation in our Brentwood clinic, we’ll discuss which option might work best for your specific case and lifestyle.

Will orthodontic treatment be painful?

Modern orthodontic techniques have significantly reduced discomfort. You may experience some soreness for a few days after adjustments or when switching to a new aligner, but this is typically mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Dr Jeet and our SmileHQ team prioritise patient comfort and will provide tips to minimise any discomfort throughout your treatment.

Can adults benefit from orthodontic treatment, or is it just for teenagers?

Orthodontic treatment can be highly effective at any age! Many of our patients at SmileHQ Brentwood are adults who are finally addressing alignment issues they’ve had since childhood, or correcting shifts that have occurred over time. Dr Jeet has extensive experience treating adult patients and offers discreet options that fit comfortably into professional lifestyles.

How often will I need to visit the clinic during treatment?

Typically, patients see Dr Jeet every 6-8 weeks during active treatment, though this can vary based on your specific treatment plan. Invisalign patients sometimes require fewer in-person visits. During your consultation at our Brentwood clinic, we’ll outline the expected appointment schedule so you can plan accordingly.

What happens after my braces are removed?

Retention is a crucial phase of orthodontic treatment. After your active treatment concludes, Dr Jeet will provide retainers and a detailed retention plan to maintain your results. Without proper retention, teeth have a natural tendency to shift back toward their original positions. At SmileHQ, we typically recommend wearing retainers full-time initially, then transitioning to nighttime wear for long-term stability.

Do you treat NHS patients for orthodontics?

While SmileHQ primarily offers private orthodontic care, Dr Jeet can provide an assessment of whether your case might qualify for NHS treatment elsewhere. For many Essex patients who don’t meet the strict NHS criteria or who are seeking treatments not available through the NHS (like lingual braces or Invisalign), our private specialist care offers an excellent alternative with minimal waiting times.

What makes SmileHQ’s approach to orthodontics different from other clinics in Essex?

At SmileHQ Brentwood, Dr Jeet combines his specialist expertise with a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach. Rather than viewing orthodontics in isolation, he works closely with our team of dental professionals to ensure your treatment complements your overall oral health and aesthetic goals. Our investment in advanced technology, Dr Jeet’s research background, and our focus on patient comfort create an orthodontic experience that many of our patients from throughout Essex tell us is unmatched elsewhere.
