What is a Specialist Endodontist?

An endodontist is a dental specialist who focuses exclusively on treating the inside of teeth, specifically the dental pulp and tissues surrounding the roots.

While all dentists receive training in root canal procedures, endodontists undergo at least two additional years of specialised training beyond dental school, focusing solely on diagnosing tooth pain and performing root canal treatments.

Unlike general dentists with a “special interest” in endodontics, true specialists like Rose have undergone rigorous, full-time specialist training programs and passed challenging examinations to earn their specialist status. This distinction ensures the highest level of expertise when it comes to saving your natural teeth.

Specialist Endodontics at SmileHQ Brentwood

At SmileHQ in Brentwood, our specialist endodontic service combines Rose’s exceptional clinical skills with cutting-edge technology to deliver the very best outcomes for our patients.

Unlike general dental practices, our dedicated endodontic suite features specialised equipment for root canal procedures. Rose works with precision dental operating microscopes that magnify the treatment area up to 25 times, allowing her to see tiny details invisible to the naked eye. This enhanced visualisation means she can identify and treat even the smallest root canals and detect tiny fractures that might otherwise be missed.

We also use 3D cone beam CT scanning technology to create detailed three-dimensional images of your teeth and surrounding structures. This advanced imaging helps Rose plan complex treatments with incredible accuracy, especially for teeth with unusual anatomy or previous unsuccessful root canal treatments.

Our Endodontic and Root Canal Treatments

  • First-time root canal therapy
  • Root canal retreatment (when previous treatment has failed)
  • Management of cracked teeth
  • Treatment of dental trauma
  • Endodontic surgery (apicoectomy)

What an amazing experience I had from start to finish. The facilities were first of all immaculate and the staff were so professional and friendly. I am over the moon with my final result (8 composite veneers) and I couldn’t be happier with the work completed by Dr Pola Reza. A big thank you to the dental assistant Claire, and the Front of House staff Hannah & Holly for making my experience so amazing. Couldn’t recommend them more!

Absolutely fantastic treatment from start to finish. My daughter was extremely anxious about having root canal treatment, but says she could barely feel anything. Rose (Endodontist) has a very professional and calming manner. The whole experience was the best experience my daughter has had at a dental practice. Belle (Nurse) was also so kind and caring, helping to completely put my daughter at ease. I can’t recommend Smile HQ and its staff enough. Also ladies on reception go above and beyond to Welcome you and put you at ease. Special mention to Hannah, for helping us get the quickest correct type of appointment, thoroughly answering all our questions. Seamless experience 😊

By far one of the best dental experiences I’ve ever had! I’ve been looking for a good dentist for a long time and always leave disappointed. The moment I walked into Smile HQ, I felt like I stepped into a Harley Street clinic – so clean and kind service. Dr Sasha took his time to explain and make sure I was very comfortable. The best dentist I’ve ever met who was actually so knowledgeable. Charlotte was brilliant and always had a smile on her face! 100% recommend this place!

This is a wonderful practice. I was seen at short notice because I was in pain and could not get an appointment with my regular dentist and it was well worth the one hour journey to get there. Dr Sasha, Nurse Stephie and Holly and Claire on reception could not have been more welcoming and kind. I had x Ray and antibiotics and everything was unhurried and explained in detail. Thank you all so much.

Your Specialist Endodontics FAQs

What exactly does an endodontist do?

An endodontist specialises in treating the inside of teeth—specifically the dental pulp containing nerves and blood vessels—and is an expert in procedures like root canal treatment, managing cracked teeth, and diagnosing complex dental pain.

What’s the difference between a ‘specialist’ endodontist and a dentist with a ‘special interest’ in endodontics?

A registered specialist endodontist like Rose has completed a full-time, 3-4 year specialist training program at an accredited institution and passed rigorous examinations to be placed on the GDC Specialist List. In contrast, a dentist with a ‘special interest’ may have taken some additional courses but hasn’t completed the extensive specialist training program required for specialist registration and typically splits their time between general dentistry and endodontic procedures.

How is a specialist endodontist different from my regular dentist?

While all dentists learn to perform basic root canals, endodontic specialists like Rose have completed an additional 3-4 years of specialised training, use advanced equipment like dental microscopes, and treat complex cases daily.

Does root canal treatment hurt when performed by a specialist?

No. Specialist endodontists are experts in pain management and use advanced techniques to ensure comfortable treatment, with most patients reporting their procedure was no more uncomfortable than having a filling.

How long does specialist root canal treatment take?

Most treatments can be completed in a single 60-90 minute visit, though more complex cases might require two appointments.

Will I need a crown after root canal treatment?

In most cases, yes—particularly for back teeth that endure heavy chewing forces, a crown is usually recommended to protect the tooth long-term after root canal treatment.

What happens if I don’t get a recommended root canal?

Without treatment, the infection inside your tooth will continue to spread, potentially leading to severe pain, abscess formation, bone loss, and ultimately the need for extraction.

How much does specialist endodontic treatment cost?

While specialist treatment may cost more than treatment from a general dentist, the higher success rates and reduced need for retreatment often make it more cost-effective in the long run—we’ll provide a detailed fee estimate before beginning any treatment.

How successful is specialist root canal treatment?

Success rates for initial treatment by a specialist like Rose typically exceed 95%, significantly higher than the success rates achieved by general dentists.

What’s the alternative to root canal treatment?

The only alternative to root canal treatment is extraction of the tooth, which then necessitates replacement with an implant, bridge, or denture—options that are typically more costly and less ideal than saving your natural tooth.

Can all teeth be saved with root canal treatment?

Not all teeth can be saved, but a specialist endodontist like Rose can often save teeth that general dentists might consider hopeless—it’s always worth getting a specialist opinion before agreeing to extraction.
