What is a sinus lift?

When upper back cheek teeth are removed, a sinus lift procedure gently lifts the sinus membrane.

Bone substitute material is inserted to restore lost bone volume and build the foundation for dental implants.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the first few days after surgery, it is strongly advised that you take it easy, as anything too strenuous can lead to bleeding. You are likely to require anything from 5 to 10 days of recuperation as this is the average amount of time it takes for the initial symptoms to settle down.

  1. It is essential that you AVOID physically touching the wound with your fingers, tissues, handkerchief etc, as this can increase the risk of a post-operative infection developing.
  2. For the first 24-48 hours, AVOID hot liquids, hot food, hot baths and doing anything too strenuous, as bleeding may start again.
  3. For the first 24 hours, do NOT rinse your mouth out as this may cause bleeding which may subsequently delay healing. It is ok to spit out and drink non-alcoholic drinks.
  4. For the first 3 days, we STRONGLY advise you to refrain from drinking alcohol.
  5. For the first 4 weeks, do NOT smoke, as smoking has been shown to significantly increase the risk of delayed healing, thus increasing the risk of your implant failing.
  6. For the first 4 weeks, we would advice you to sneeze through your mouth rather than your nose.
  7. During the first week, AVOID eating solid or even soft foods. ONLY consume liquid food in order to avoid food particles inadvertently contaminating the surgery site.
  8. During the second week, you may add semi-liquid, mashed food to your diet. If you have some natural teeth and eating is not a problem, you may also eat soft foods (I.e. nothing crunchy or hard).
  9. For the first month following your sinus lift procedure, we STRONGLY recommend you to AVOID flying and AVOID using heat treatments such as sauna and steam rooms. We advise you to AVOID performing exercises such as yoga and pilates.
  10. For the first 4 months following surgery, eat a somewhat modified diet. ‘Modified’ means fish, pasta, rice and other soft food. Nothing crunchy or hard.

Although this varies from patient to patient, generally speaking it can take a minimum of 4-6 months for the sinus graft to heal.

Following the completion of the sinus lift procedure, it is common to experience mild soreness for the first few days following treatment. This should not alarm you as it is a very normal thing. Luckily, there are some proven ways to make the soreness and discomfort manageable once you leave the clinic. The best way to manage pain following your treatment is to take painkillers at the recommended dosage and intervals for the first one-to-two days.

If the pain is unbearable or still persists after a few days, contact us and we will be glad to assist you.

Not all implant procedures performed in the upper back cheek teeth region require a sinus lift, however in cases where the bone volume available is insufficient to support the dental implant, we would highly recommend this procedure.
